2020 Headshot Crew Fitness Challenge!
Well, 2020 is here and I know many of you make resolutions to better yourselves in every way, shape, and form. For me, the New Year is usually a good time to revisit my current goals and make fitness goals as well.
Whether you want to lose weight, gain weight or just get yourself healthier than no better time than now to do it. We've done this challenge HSC style in the past and have seen people make great strides.
I'm a bit of a yoyo with my weight and have kept it in pretty decent shape since weighing in at 230 lbs on 1/1/15. I haven't gone back up into that realm in the past 5 years but did weigh in at 209.9 this morning after midnight. I need to weigh around 185 lbs to remain competitive in my Laser and the Master World Championships that are taking place in Australia in March. There is a pre-regatta starting March 13th, so that's my date to weigh in at 185 lbs. I essentially need to lose 25lbs by then. I did weigh in after gorging myself with a New Year's feast though! So I'm optimistic I'm going to get off to a good start.
If you'd like to partake in the challenge then feel free to add a comment below. If you want to add a shot of your current weight on your scale or if you have no fear then feel free to post a current body shot!
We'll check in every now and then to see how everyone is doing and of course I'll be posting on social. So watch out for #abalerts once I get the abs to come out and play.
Here's my current situation while pushing the gut out and sucking that sucker in! Let's see where I can get it in the coming months. Who's in?

I am at 209.6. Down from 228 in October.
Nice work, Jon!
Officially down 20+. 207.8 this morning. Fluctuating between there and 211.
Totally in! 1/1/2020 I was right at 188.7, looking to drop to about 175 and tone up, lets go crew!!
I'm in. OUCH! When I stepped on the scale I did not expect this. Most I have ever weighed. By a bunch! Happy and grateful to have this group to hold me accountable.
Thanks, Peter!
Hold you accountable to what? What is the goal? What is the deadline?
The goal is 190. The deadline is as soon as I get there.
The accountability is more just in my head. By posting my weight in this thread
I feel accountable. The forum itself will hold me accountable.
A deadline is a valuable thing. It enables failure, which is a motivator. If you know you have until March 1, you’re not going to eat that ice cream. If it’s just needing to lose the weight in the next few years, an ice cream now doesn’t really matter.
I'm in! Started Jan 1. My program is simple. No bread, no sugar, no alcohol. I did it last year and went from 210 to 175 in about four months. The first 15 lbs I lost without going to the gym, and then I added a 5 day a week gym routine that sped things along. And I tracked everything. I then backed off the discipline and now I'm back to about 190. So here we go again, and it's good to be working alongside everyone else! The goal is to be back to 175 by April 12th (Easter.) Good luck, all! We can do this!
Ugh! I would love to get to the 140s. I haven’t seen those numbers since 2016. On January 2nd I weighed in at 159.3. 10 pounds makes a huge difference for me and 10 more an even bigger difference. But for now I’ll go for the 10 by March 15th. As I age and become more sedentary, the pounds attach!
That said, I am grateful to have Peter Hurley & this group to add to my motivation.
I had a photo, but was unable to upload It.
Day 1, Thursday, 159.3
Day 3, Saturday, I 157.4.
PROGRESS!
PLAN: move more, eat less, eat better food choices, and exercise. See you at the finish line!!!
I’m in! I have been doing keto-esque for a few months now and I’m already down about 17 pounds. 5 of those have been since attending the Headshot Intensive. I’m currently at 154 pounds and aiming for between 130 pounds in 135 pounds. Ready to get it off!
Peter, I am in!
After all the December craziness I gained 10 pounds on top of my 50 lbs overweight. I am at 259.7 lbs and my goal is 200 by the end of the year.
Thanks for organizing this, group support and but kicking really works!
This is awesome! What I did to get my ass into shape is go to the HeadshotCrewz in 2016 and walk everywhere and loose 20 lbs. I'm sure HeadshotMania2 is getting people in shape too when teamed up with this challenge! :-)
Today marked my return to the gym. I hurt; in that good "I worked out but now can't sit down or stand up without support because my legs are rubbery" kind of way.
IN! I started on the road back in August but slipped over the holidays. Was up to around 212 back in July, got down to around 190 by December. My goal is 180, which is what I weighed in high school. I found success with intermittent fasting and being sugar-free.
Several months ago I made a few keto style changes to my diet, which resulted in my dropping a few pounds, being less hungry during the day and being less SLEEPY in the afternoon.
(a) Breakfast: drop the Kashi cereal w oat-milk,; have one or two scrambled eggs w aged cheddar cheese. Delicious.
(b) All day long, instead of eating bread, when that urge comes up have a tablespoon of peanut butter or a couple tablespoons of hummus (both very low carb).
(c) Early, light dinner: Might have a few carbs such as potato or one slice of bread along with the protein and veg.
(d) As always lots of protein and veg.
(e) Dessert cravings filled with a couple small squares of dark chocolate or apple.
PEANUT BUTTER TIP (low carb): I buy the type that has no additives which means the oil rises to the top. Pretty messy if you open it that way, so I leave the container turned upside down overnight and the oil "rises" to the bottom. Then I vigorously stir it for a few minutes with a butter knife. Place in frig where the oil stops segregating. Delicious. (In NYC Westside Market has a great brand from Canada called "Brads".)
You can see all the women jumping in on this! haha!
Kudos. I'm in a challenge, but no freakin way is anyone going to see the before! 50 hits hard.
I hear you!!
LOL yes. Don't want to scare the children.
Salutations to everyone... I have been MIA from this group for a very long time but I am getting back on track... long story short, three months back my weight was 260lbs. Then I changed my diet a bit with less carbs, meat but more greens and more water. Started losing weight rapidly in which I thought it was a success by weighting at 230lbs in less than a month. Then yet I was feeling tired, very thirsty, my vision was very blurr... became very confuse at times... depression kicked in and my photography schooling with NYIP and home became of less interest. One day at my regular job I became very disoriented to the point of passing out... my coworkers decided to drag me to the ER in which it was discovered that I am now Diabetic with Diabetes type 2, my sugar was at 600 and if I would have gone home on that day instead of the ER the Dr. said I was on the edge of a coma. Why am I telling you this testimony? Please do not ignore the signs... stay healthy and check yourself with your Dr. Regularly... I was careless in my eatings and Dr visits and now I am paying the price... it is not fun people. I just got married in May of 2019 and already my wife was going to become a widow. I am now watching my blood sugar, working out regularly (my weight now is still at 230lbs) and getting back into photography in which I love very much. I hope one day to meet you guys in one of the Headshot Crew get together. Thank you for listening.
I'm in too!! It's time. Starting a new eating plan this week that I'm super stoked about. My goal is to drop 100 lbs by November!
I'm IN!! My Starting weight on 1/22/19 was 231 lbs. By August 8th I got down to 201 but have been pretty stagnant since then, and even regressed a bit over the holidays back to 207.8 as of this morning. My goal is also 185 by Tuesday, June 16th...exactly 23 pounds and 23 weeks from today.
I would also like to share my favorite non-scale victory over the past year. Like many of my fellow Type II diabetics out there, I was on a myriad of medications to control my blood sugar. When I approached my endocrinologist to ask her for her approval of a diet I was considering called Optavia, she said that if I was serious about it, she would cut the number of medications I was taking in half on day one. from 6 to 3 and within 2 months I was down to 1.
I'm not here to tout Optavia because so many modern programs from Keto to Paleo to low carb etc are all really good, it's just that I know different plans work for different people and I'm just happy to provide a testimony for that one.
If anyone would like more information on Optavia, feel free to call my wife/Optavia coach, Julie at (630) 776-6156.
I'm in! My studio is both a photography studio & martial arts school so I'm usually quite active but due to a recent hip replacement my inactivity has caused me to put on a few pounds. I havent weighed myself yet so those stats will follow. Hopefully I'll make some progress in time for Headshot Mania! :-)
I joined in the challenge at 244 lbs. Got signed up to noom and working through that.
I'm at 239 today, but the goal is 200.
How is everyone doing? I'm amped up and keeping it going. On a 24hr fast right now. Trying to kick it into high gear!
I did my first class of the year last night at 8 pm and did my second class this morning at 5! Down 5 of 17 pounds!
I’m down 4 lbs so far, below 160 for the first time in about 18 months!
Heading to Vegas for a week for my day job, but bringing my workout gear to stay on track...
We got some birthdays last week in the family and I slipped up off the diet with some cake but going strong down. If I continue following the diet and exercise at the same level as now I may reach the goal sooner.
I've put on nearly 1 pound, but in good news, the Christmas chocolate has gone by 2 pounds!
I'm down another pound; 237.8 this morning. Heading towards 200!
- since 2.1. lost about 6,5lbs
- 100km+ a week with my roadbike
- went to the gym 2-3 times a week
- did my first yoga class this year today
Whoop whoop!
The abs are reappearing! Though I will most likely take a few steps back this weekend as it's my wedding on Friday!
Wow, Rich!!! Congratulations!! Be “in the moment “ and enjoy!!
Thanks Beth! I was and did!
I think I read somewhere, and I agree, that who you choose for a life partner (if you choose a life partner) is the single thing that has the greatest impact on your happiness and satisfaction in life. I think it's certainly true of me. We'll be celebrating our 28th anniversary this spring. I loved the photo you posted in Instagram. You both look so full of joy! I think of you as a friend, and I couldn't be happier for you both!!!
Wow 28 years! That's incredible. I'm glad you've had such a long and happy marriage, Beth!
I had a bit of a set-back. I injured my ankles walking 10 miles in Rome on round-top cobblestones— surprising to me, because I walk a lot and ten miles isn’t usually a problem at all. We’re on our way to Florence, where we’ve arranged for a wheelchair for me. Bummer! I’m hoping to see the doctor when I return on Monday to see what’s going on. It’ll put a crimp in my aerobics portion of my workouts. (I hate swimming.). Hopefully I’ll be better soon!
Been intermittent fasting since Jan 1st I only eat from 1-7pm... staying strong on that part. Sticking with strict keto and doing kickboxing and hiking that killer 4 mile loop behind my house every other day.... So far so good. I'm down to 130 from 138. :)
I've been doing intermittent fasting since before it had a name! Back then, it was just called "skipping meals," and was looked down on! I find that I'm not really hungry in the morning. When I get into my "mode," I can pretty easily do with only one meal (dinner) a day, with maybe a small (>300 cal) snack at 3 or 4 pm. I find that when I'm in this zone, I don't experience much hunger (ketosis??). But... when I'm *not* in the zone, I can get unquenchable hunger. I can eat and eat all day, and it's never enough. There's never enough food to fill me up. And, at only 5 ft "tall", I have to keep my calories down to around 1,000 a day, if I want to be at my most awesome weight. I'm just shifting now from "OMG, so many food options, must have them all!" to "food is fuel." Since I really love food, I make sure that even in the zone, I appreciate and enjoy each bite.
Yesterday I returned from my trip to Italy, where I spent the last four days in a wheelchair. I couldn't walk more than a step or two without intense pain. Didn't let it stop me! Well, all the thanks goes to my amazing husband who pushed me for miles and miles up hills and over rough cobblestones. Just saw the doctor, and it seems to be just a tendon thing -- luckily no stress fractures. I actually lost three pounds during the trip!! I have a personal trainer appointment in two days, but I'll just ask to do only upper body and core work. I have a shoot scheduled for Saturday, so I'm glad that I won't have to reschedule it. Aerobic work will have to wait a bit. I'm hoping that I'm totally back to normal in time for Headshot Mania!!
I'm just one week into it, and I'm down five pounds! I know those first few drop quickly. I'm hoping for a steady 1-2 pounds a week to get to my goal by my target date. That's allowing for a bit of a set-back at Mania, where I assume non-ideal diet stuff might be consumed...
Peter, FYI re your recent 24-hour fast:
https://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/fa…
I became a Dad November 8, 2018. I decided it was time to become all adult like and take care of my family so I applied for life insurance in 2019. I was then denied life insurance because of results from a blood test. So I figured I should go to the Dr to see what that is all about. First I had to find a Dr. I don't remember the last time I actually went to the Dr. December 5, 2019 they diagnosed me with Type 2 diabetes. So that's why I was denied life insurance.
At the time of that Dr appointment I weighted almost 210. The Dr said I didn't have to lose weight but any weight I did lose would help regulate the diabetes along with diet. So ever since December 5, 2019 I have changed the way I eat and what I eat. Boy is it a lot of work to read every Nutritional Fact about the food you eat. So in doing that I have lost about 9lbs so far. I have always wanted to be under 200lbs so I have set a goal of 190lbs. Once I get there I figure I will see how I feel and look and decide if I want to try and lose more and just maintain that weight.
GO TEAM!
I've lost 90 pounds in the last 9 months. Hitting it hard in 2020. Here is too 20 more to release!
I love your profile pic, Jason! I was bummed when they teased your balls yesterday.
LOL. If you weren't on the CrewCast, this might seem like an odd comment...
I am waiting to see who reveals themselves as non-attendants at the CrewCast. :-D
For me it's more of a fitness thing. I don't really want to weigh less than 130. I mean 125 wouldn't be bad; but I have my 3rd degree black belt test coming up in March and I need to work on my cardio, flexibility, technique, etc. I've been a bit of a sloth about going to class because I've been growing my headshots business. The problem is that I'll be in VEGAS with YOU GUYS for ten days only 4 weeks before my test. That is prime time for training for my test. So while there, I'd love some workout buddies. Anybody game??? Any TKD folks?
I studied Tae Kwon Do (Moo Duk Kwan) in NYC for five years. I got to a high red belt, but tore my knee cartilage dong a flying side kick. This was years ago, so I'm afraid I wouldn't be a very good partner. I'm pretty out of shape now but working hard to get back. I loved tae kwon do, though!! Didn't matter what size you were. 5 foot nothing me loved sparring with the big guys!!
Maybe we can revisit some of the forms together!? TKD is a very small world. I bet our masters knew each other. My Master was a member of two Kwans while growing up, Moo Duk Kwan and Ji Do Kwan, but he mainly teaches Kukkiwan forms. We don't start learning the Kwan forms until we get our black belts. I originally started back in 2001, up to my green instructor, then came back six years ago to continue. It was really tough to re-learn everything to get to where I was, and then continue forward. The second and third TaeGook PoomSae are still a bit mushy even though I know 16 forms now! But I'm really glad I went back. So much community. My best friends are there. :-) If you're game we can warm up with the kicks and combination techniques. It would be fun! I don't think I'll be doing it in my DoBok though. Maybe a little awkward, even if it is the most comfortable.
