Following on from a bit of poorly targeted tertiary education and an overseas sojourn or two, in 1996 I settled into a job in the rapidly growing field of computers. I was always a curious person and I think working in this field sated my desire and passion for learning new things.
Spending my days visiting people in midst of catastrophic failures of technology, I started gaining an interest in how people react and express themselves. I always used to think of my role as 10% technical. The rest of it was spent talking people down, helping them out of the rut and getting them back to their best. This gave me a new angle on the world I lived in and opened up my eyes to the personal stories that are the real driver of progress in this world.
It wasn’t until later in life though that the real trigger came. Looking back now I realize that there was always a camera within arms reach. It wasn’t until my wife, Wendy, pointed this out to me in 2010 that I moved into photography professionally. Her support gave me the momentum I needed to get chasing my passion for portrait photography.
I am now lucky enough to combine two of my life’s great passions and am constantly astounded by how much the people that come into my life, because of photography, can teach me. I still geek out occasionally though, if you’d like to hear it just mention my daughter, Brianna, or old film cameras and I’ll likely chew your ear off ☺
