As a director, I saw a lot of headshots cross my desk that did nothing to inspire. There was no fire in the eyes. No real engagment with the camera or the photographer. What bothered me the most, though, was looking at a headshot that was so retouched that it ceased to give me an accurate view of the actor.
Over the past year as a filmmaker/producer/photographer, I've been researching headshot photography and I came across Peter Hurley's work. Suddenly, it all fit together. Here was someone who understood.
Taking his advice to heart, I've been shooting headshots for local actors with amazing results. Bringing their personality into the picture is paramount. Keeping the retouching to a minimum is key. And the eyes... it's all about the eyes!
