About Sam

I am a photographer working across a range of creative and commercial applications. I keep myself very busy juggling my various photo-based pursuits alongside teaching photography at the Centre for Creative Photography. I have an active arts practice, and exhibit regularly in both photography and moving-image. I run my stills practice, 'Silvertrace', At Cog Creative Space - a shared studio I manage in Norwood South Australia. I specialise in entertainment portraiture, working in film, television, theatre, dance & music as a stills photographer. I have recently established 'Headshot Laboratory' at my studio, offering studio-based headshots for performers and professionals. I see my headshot work as a creative collaboration between myself and the subject. I love working with people and find every headshot a challenging and rewarding experience. I strive for excellence in all my work and am on a constant learning curve - having worked as a photographer for over 20 years I am constantly amazed by the developing technologies and styles, and do my best to keep up to date with an ever-changing industry.

I have worked on a range of feature films, tv series, short films and documentaries, photographing well known personalities like Eddie Redmayne, Natalie Imbruglia, Hugo Weaving, and Toni Collette. I love my stills work but with a young family the location-based demands in film & TV are less suitable than they used to be. My headshot work keeps me connected with the entertainment arts and allows me to work with people in a comfortable, intimate and functional environment, and I love the challenge of creating authentic, engaging and interesting portraits.

I was born in South Africa and have lived in the UK and Australia. I am immensely curious, friendly, and quite short.
