WHERE ARE YOU FROM AND WHERE DO YOU LIVE NOW?
I am from Coimbra, Portugal, and I always lived here.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN SHOOTING HEADSHOTS?
I have been shooting headshots since 2017, when I found this amazing crew. Before that, I thought I was doing headshots, but it was something else I want to forget.
WHAT IS YOUR LIGHTING SETUP FOR HEADSHOTS?
I started with the triangle but last year changed to something similar to a parallel setup. I use two big soft lighters, almost parallel. With the triangle, I wasn’t able to get half body with good light, if needed. This way if I need to get more body (some realtors and politicians want that), I just take a step back.
WHAT ELSE DO YOU LIKE TO SHOOT?
Portraits, I love doing portraits with artists, and dogs. I have a project called Be My Friend, where I shoot shelter dogs to help with adoptions. It’s almost like headshots, but with dogs. I have a gallery here with some of those images. https://www.instagram.com//bemyfriendpt
WHEN DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER PH AND THE HSC?
Peter, I discovered 6 or 7 year ago. I was browsing youtube and found an interview with him. I watched it all, and I liked the way he talked about headshots, but I thought headshots were boring.
Some years later, in 2017, I don’t remember where, but I found some Peter Hurley stuff again. But now headshots were something I wanted to shoot. As usual, I thought “I’ll learn this by myself”. So I did my first headshots trying to imitate Peter’s style. They were not bad photos, but still not good headshots. I was quick to realize I needed help, and when I found the HSC it was perfect.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO JOIN THE CREW ONCE YOU FOUND IT?
Maybe one or two days. There was no need to think much. I wanted to learn, I saw there were some videos from Peter, and there was a helpful crew, it was an easy decision.
WHAT IS ONE THING PEOPLE WOULD NEVER GUESS ABOUT YOU?
I have very low confidence in speaking English. I understand almost everything but when it’s time to talk, it annoys me not remembering the words I need. Writing is much easier!
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT YOU?
Today I can only think of a goal I achieved this week. It was one of the goals I wrote on a paper last year - Having one of my photos on the cover of a big Portuguese magazine (it’s like Time magazine). And it was not only one image, but four! The magazine did four different covers! Since we are all photographers here, I think you’ll understand the joy I am feeling with this.

Love this! ... And I guarantee your English is much better than my Portuguese!
Ah! I heard that before. :) Thank you, Lisa.
Awesome!
Thank you, Peter!
Wow! Beautiful work, João!! I love your dog portraits... but I also love your humans. Great to learn more about you!
And, yes, I agree with Lisa Marie. It's so impressive when someone learns a second language well enough to communicate. So many Americans never learn another language, even though I think it's so important. Heck -- they barely learn their own language! Your written English is probably a lot better than many Americans, LOL. And I bet your spoken English is just fine. A lot better than my French, Japanese or ASL, I guarantee it! ;)
Thank you, Beth!
We learn english in school at young ages. And we have the movies with the original language, it helps a lot! I hate what they do in Spain, or Germany, where they use dubbing to their native language.
Cool to know more about you and your work!
Thx, Rainer!
I absolutely love Joao's work. Just amazing.
Thank you, Rob! You're doing amazing work!
Love your work thanks for sharing
Thank you, Menno!
I have been an American all my life and my English isn't that great LOL. Learning a second language is impossible for me so Kudos to you for the effort! Beautiful work my friend!
Thank you, Brian! For us it's easy to learn, as we start listening english in the early ears, on tv. And we learn it in school at young ages, it helps a lot. My problem is with the accent.
Awesome work, João! I love it.
Thank you, Thomas!
Big fan of your work João!
Thank you, Mathieu!
Wow. Awesome work. Captivating!
Thank you, Craig!
Love your work, dude!
Thx, Pete! Congrats on your new Associate status! ;)
Love your work and getting to know you!
Thank you, Suzanne!
Love your work. I am just getting into dogs and curious what you use to get their attention. I have a clicker and a duck call. Sometimes use a squeak toy.
Thank you Alisa! Well, patience. Lots of patience! And some weird noises I make. :)
Beautiful Shots and nice to learn more about you. I am of Portuguese decent, and I do not speak the language ; [
I did, however visited Portugal last year and look forward to another trip when we can travel again.
Thank you, Mikala! Yeah, "Freitas" it's a portuguese name. That's so awesome!
João Azevedo João, can you give me your best try at showing me in writing (not easy!) how I would correctly pronounce your name?
Thanks!
Beth Madison : it's easier if you check it here https://youtu.be/_fOndVOl5SE
Thank you! Really helpful! So I would say it's pretty close to Juh-wow, with a really soft "J" and almost hint of an "L' in the tongue position.
Hello. I am new to the hsc and finding my way around. I love this thread of pics!
Hi, Marybeth! Welcome!
Why don't you make a post and introduce yourself? :D
Olá Joāo! Ôtimo! Lindas fotos...sobretudo os cāes! :-) But seriously, the people photos are beautiful, but the dogs are too adorable. What a great project you're involved in, Be My Friend. Eu morava em Portugal quando era pequena...durante a revoluçāo em 1974. O meu pai trabalhou no NATO em Oeiras. Agora moro perto de Sāo Francisco em Califónia. I've forgotten much of my Portuguese but I'm sure your spoken English is just as perfect as your written English. Até logo.
Really? That's amazing! Your portuguese seems perfect! Thank you! It's awesome being able to help dogs get a new home. :)
Awesome! Love your work!
Thank you, Inna!
Great work, I love it. And I totally get what you said about the language; I can relate to that ;-)
Someone that understands me well! :) Thank you, Angie!
Congratulations on the publication, Joao. Your images are wonderful. The pet photos are so vivid and beautiful, too. =)
Thank you, Tara!
