Background
For Vincent Pelly, photography has been a lifelong passion: an innate lens for observing the world around him. It has been a creative outlet, a visual language, and a way of capturing a moment in time.
Beginning his practice in the mid-1970s — working in Long Island studios as well as a darkroom he built in the basement at his childhood home — Vince was drawn to the rhythm of the medium. “Seeing something, capturing it on film, experimenting with light and long exposure, developing and manipulating it in the darkroom,” he explains.
Vince’s path began in earnest as a student of commercial photography. Refining his approach to studio lighting and large-format film, he developed a particular fondness for black-and-white headshots, arriving at a striking and timeless approach to portraiture that continues to inspire him.
His early commercial work landed him a job with a private New Hyde Park studio from 1977 to 1979, where he sharpened his skills at shooting, processing, and developing film. He assisted on location shoots, and himself grew to specialize in lifestyle photography and portraits.
Vince has continued to freelance for decades, working with 35mm film and digital processes alike. He has grown his portfolio to include music editorial and concert photography, with work at times landing on the websites of outlets such as The Wall Street Journal and SPIN magazine.
Today, Vince is available for commissions and assignments in New York City, Brooklyn and Long Island; for lifestyle, event, portrait, headshot, engagement and couples shoots. His bespoke approach prioritizes the needs of the client, customizing every shoot and package to individual needs. He prefers shooting on location, and can work with clients to choose the perfect setting, whether it be a beach, park, street, or at home. He also offers studio appointments by request.
Over the years, Vince’s signature approach to photography has continuously drawn from those formative years in analog work, honing lighting concepts and creativity. “Those are skills that I derived from shooting film,” he says, “and from years of work manipulating images in darkrooms.”
