Mentor Post - Rim Light - MagSnoot

Need a rim light for your subjects with speedlights? Check this lighting tool out: the MagSnoot by MagMod.

I've been using MagMod products since they first came out. I admit the first generation was ok, but the 2nd generation of MagMods are MUCH better. I still use a lot of the 1st generation stuff. I've been using them as kicker lights for my guys with white/dark backgrounds.

Just got the MagSnoot last week and finally got to test them out on Amber (my mannequin). See below for photos.

Testing:
I used a LumoPro lp180 at 1/16 power at 24mm. Settings on my Fujifilm X-T1 with 56mm were F2.8 1/180 ISO200 on an unlite Lastolite Hilite (review of the Lastolite Hilite coming soon). After aiming the MagSnoot on my subject I used the test button to see where the light will hit

Pros:
- Easy to pack into your gear bag. Small enough to be squished with other gear.
- Easy to install onto your flashgun. Works with colored gels as well in the MagMod system
- 4 degrees in one modifier. Can be used as a hair light, side light, accent light. Very versatile.

Cons:
- Took some playing with in order to get used to changing the degree levels due to the rubber silicone.
- Silicone picks up a lot of lint.
- Earth magnets (part of the MagMod system that makes it easy to use) - I put them in an area in my bag where not batteries or electronics are nearby. I know studies out there say earth magnets don't interfere with electronics, but in my mind I'm thinking that I gotta keep them separated.

See below for sample images of the MagSnoot being used as a rim light. Pending human subject experimentation.

Two thumbs up! Love your model - nice skin:)

Cool stuff, would love to have that, but so far not available in Germany. :-(
