About Rob

First off I am a husband and father who has the greatest family in the world. If it wasn't for the love and encouragement of my family I would never have become a photographer and I would not have changed careers at the age of 42. You just don't pick up a camera and become a photographer, it takes hundreds if not thousands of hours of learning and practice to be a professional photographer. Since I still had to support my family I had to work full time during the day and learn / practice my photography in the evening and on weekends which didn't leave much time for my family the first few years. If it wasn't for the understanding and patience of my loving wife Leiann and my kids I would never have become the professional commercial photographer I am today.

I specialize in all aspect of commercial photography and have been shooting professionally since 2010. I was a bit of a late starter when it comes to photography as I spent the first half of my life as a Carpenter/Cabinetmaker. Some people might think that going from building houses and furniture to photography is quite the jump but in reality it wasn't that far of a leap. Working with wood for so many years taught me a lot of valuable lessons that I transferred over to my photography. It has given me an eye for details, taught me to be patient and not to rush through things and to take pride in what I produce. Another advantage that it has given me is that I have had the opportunity to work and interact with thousands of people over the years, from corporate executives building their muti-million dollar dream homes to young first year apprentice trades persons who are helping to build that home. This interaction has taught me how to connect with a types of people and I believe it has given me an advantage when I interact with my all of my photography clients.

With a back ground in construction it was just natural for me to fall into photographing architecture / interiors of new homes for local builders. When I'm photographing a builders newest show home the shoot is very methodical and technical. Every shot is set up to show the best composition and lighting for that room or rooms. Once I have the composition that I want I start to set up the lighting for the room, it can be a simple as a single light to fill in the shadows or as complex as multiple lights set up in multiple rooms. You have to light each room so that is looks natural and inviting which can be easier said that done.

Now creating portraits / headshots is not to far off from architectural photography, you need to you how to compose and light your subject to make them look their very best. The biggest difference in the two is that with portraits / headshots you also have to be able to connect with your subject and make them feel at ease in front of the camera in order to create a great portrait or headshot. This is something that I feel I can do very well and I believe it shows in my work.
