Running your business or ruining it! Episode 1.
I know this may seem harsh but there is a reality to running and managing your own business. There are many people not only in the crew but everywhere that start a new business without a clue of what to do. Some people afraid to take that first step so I applaud you for making it this far. I'm not here to tell you how or what it is that you need to do. This is more of a story; it will be a series of posts.
We all started from somewhere or at least the majority have. So don't think you need to have photography experience to make this work. I did have prior knowledge and use of cameras from home use and at work, I did run Adorama in NYC, yup that store. I didn't think it was ever something I would do to make money or build a business around. I had access to all the camera gear I wanted and yes, I was the father that showed up to a school outing with a Nikon D300 and a 70-200 or almost had to leave a football game because I had professional gear.
So how did I move into being a full-time photographer? It didn't happen right away it took another 5 years or so after watching the retail market change and crumble that I decided to switch direction. I did have all professional gear at home and didn't need to purchase much to start a business.
I decided this was the way for me to go but needed to make sure I could make money and build something. I had to build my P&L and see what it would take to break even and then to make a profit and then could I make enough money to support my family. Well, this is where it starts... Episode 2 coming soon.

I am very interested to hear what happened next!
Thank you for the post, Scott! I learn a lot from all you seasoned professionals. There's a lot to it, and for me I think it's going in the right direction. So much better to have the assistance of this great group.
Waiting to hear more.
I love this idea.
I'd be curious how you prioritize different components of a business.
For example, you and I have talked about liability insurance,
and how few photographers actually have this
(while they will happily rush out to upgrade software or get involved in systems that make them feel like business owners).
