Feb 2017 PhD contest is LIVE PEOPLE! Submit your best shot by 2/28!

Our February 2017 PhD competition is live PEOPLE! All images must be submitted below by midnight Eastern time on 2/28. Winners will be announced on one of our first CrewCasts in March.

The winner of the PhD in photography contest each month gets to spend 2 days of their choice hangin & shabang'in with me in the NY studio or any other venue where I'll be for a few days. You'll be immersed full bore into the Peter Hurley philosophy of portraiture and afterwards you'll earn your PhD(Peter Hurley Direction) in photography! Including a badge of honor on Headshot Crew by being labeled as a PhD.

Winners also receive a free year on Headshot Crew and both my DVD's and a personalized signed copy of my book "The Headshot!" as well as getting a headshot taken by yours truly. Enter below by submitting the best headshot you've ever taken and your chance at a killer time Shabang'in NYC style with me! One winner will be chosen each month and one other random prize winner will be chosen using our randomizer and they will get their choice of either of my tutorials(The Art Behind The Headshot Tutorial or Illuminating the face), so don't look at the competition and shy away from this. The critique of all the work submitted is valuable for the entire group and each one of you have a chance to win something!

Once you are chosen you have a year to figure out a time period when you can get your butt to NYC and hang with me in the NY studio or find me on the road somewhere and hang with me. Winners are usually chosen on the first Tuesday of each month during our weekly Headshot Crew CrewCast unless otherwise noted.

In order to be considered you must be a member of the Headshot Crew Protégé coaching group, so get your butt in here and submit a killer shot for this sucker. Here's the link to register: https://headshotcrew.com/user/register

Only 1 submission per person per month. Enter every month with a new submission of your choice. Once an image has been submitted it can't be used in a subsequent month.

Get a submission in there and we'll see you on one of our weekly CrewCast's soon!

How do you actually submit an image for the contest...?

Same way you just asked; put a few words of text to name your subject and optionally provide a tiny nugget of info about them, then click the photo icon underneath the text box and upload your photo.

OK, this is my first shot at this here. I know it might not be exactly what this crew is looking for but is one of my best shots during this past year and I have get a lot of good comments on it in other forums. The subject is a fellow Soldier and NY Yankees Fan. Tyler has, in my opinion, a great bone structure and as you say a strong jaw line. This was taken Wight an alien bee in a soft box with a white reflector for fill and a single fluorescent in the back as a kicker. Hope you all like it and if not please give me your feedback so I can improve for the next.

I like this, maybe brightening the shadows a bit and closing in in the cropping wil improve it.

Hector, I think we're supposed to save the comments and critique for C&C posts. Although the judges are rarely swayed by comments (or cash), in the end it's not a popularity contest, it's a best image contest.

Selfie for the contest!? Yes. I know I have a lazy eye... If I was a client, I would have shot the other side. Trouble focussing as using self timer.

Errin...
This is a longtime colleague of mine who was attending a conference with me in Chicago. We're both based in different cities and hadn't seen each other in years. When we found out we were going to be in the same city, she asked me to do her headshot. I packed a limited lighting setup and we set it up in a hotel room. Voila!
It was a nice test to see what I could do outside of my usual setup!

Headshot of Victor Machin: Okay I am going to try this for the first time.. I was at the WPPI 2017 and met Peter Hurley so I am excited to submit my first submission for this contest. This picture is of my son and I did some head shots of him for his website. He is a great composer and musician. I used one main octagon light and two reflectors to brighten the shadows on the right side and define his bone structure. Let me know what your thoughts are and what I should do different. Let's do this!!!!

Doing headshots at a conference and this lady walks up. Loved everything about her style and aura. She rocked it and she loved her new headshot!

I decided to post John instead of another image. John lost his close friend as a result of a police shooting. He has since become a vocal social justice advocate in our community. I feel like this image shows his passion, but maybe more so the pain I know he feels as a result of his loss.
